Double-hung
A window whose two sashes both slide up and down and, on most modern units, tilt inward for cleaning. The traditional American window.
What it means for you
The safe all-rounder: open the top and bottom for good airflow, and wash the outside from indoors upstairs. Because only half opens at once, a bedroom may need a larger unit to hit egress than a casement would.
